A cita\u00e7\u00e3o da Academia sueca no An\u00fancio do pr\u00eamio diz que receberam o pr\u00eamio \u201cpor terem elucidado a estrutura qu\u00e2ntica da teoria das intera\u00e7\u00f5es eletrofracas\u201d. Podendo-se dizer que eles colocaram a teoria da f\u00edsica de part\u00edculas elementares numa base matem\u00e1tica s\u00f3lida. Em particular, eles demonstraram como usar a teoria para calcular com grande precis\u00e3o certas grandezas f\u00edsicas.
